<image:caption>The enormous pectoral, dorsal and ventral fins are fully shaped with their accurate penciled rays yet to be carved. Sturgeon as far as I could tell from research have 2 - 3 times the fin ray counts of modern fish like salmonids and bass. The head is in early rough-out and shaping.</image:caption>

<image:title>Fish Carving - Process and Projects - Creating a Great Lakes Gentle Giant - A 60” Lake Sturgeon - Make it stand out</image:title>
<image:caption>The body is complete, sealed with two coats of sanding sealer and ready to be sprayed with gesso. The scutes along the back and side are inlaid (difficult to see the back’s in this photo), the eye is sculpted with sculpting epoxy, and the barbels are made from solid brass rod. While I could have easily carved the barbels, the brass rods will survive accidental knocks from handling, which with a carving 5 feet long is very easy to do!</image:caption>

<image:caption>19th Century Aesthetics - The spire’s area above the roof line is approximately two-thirds (measured from the globes outer edges for hip roof cupolas), to the full length of the vane with substantial breathing space between the globes and cardinal points (N-E-S-W). Also, 19th century vane makers scaled their signature cardinal points and globe diameters to their vane sizes. Contemporary vanes are usually paired with the same size and style cardinals and globes regardless of vane size. 36” Rainbow Trout vane, 3” and 5” globes, 23” x 3.75” cardinal points.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Weathervanes</image:title>
<image:caption>Contemporary Aesthetics - The spire’s area above the roof line is typically one-third or less than the length of the vane. Most notably is the lack of space between the globes and cardinal points. While aesthetically balanced, the arrangement becomes too compressed and busy to appreciate from typical viewing distances, and optically diminishes the vane’s size and overall presentation. In the above example, the vane would only be about 14” above the roof line without the additional height of the hip roof styled cupola (also undersized - section on Cupola Design coming soon). Vane is an imported reproduction of the famous trotting champion Black Hawk produced by many of the 19th century American vane makers. 36” vane, 2” and 4” globes and 18” x 3” cardinal points.</image:caption>
